About the client

A fiction author ready to build his online world

A.S. Colworth is a fiction author whose work spans detailed, immersive worlds built around rich characters, distinct locations and intricate lore. As his portfolio of work grew, so did the need for a proper online home — a place where readers could discover his books, follow the progress of upcoming work and dive deeper into the worlds he creates.

For an author building a community around their work, a website isn’t just a marketing tool. It’s an extension of the creative world itself. It needs to feel right — matching the tone and atmosphere of the work, welcoming to new readers and rich enough to give existing fans somewhere to spend time and keep coming back.

A.S. Colworth came to us ready to take that step.

The challenge

Building a home for a world that didn't exist online yet

A.S. Colworth had no existing digital presence to build from. The challenge wasn't about fixing what was broken — it was about creating something entirely from scratch that felt right for the work and the audience.

That creative brief required careful listening. Genre, tone, imagery, the way the writing felt — all of these needed to inform the design decisions rather than the other way around. A generic author website template wouldn't serve a world as specific as the one A.S. Colworth had built. The site needed to feel like an extension of his work, not just a place to sell books.

Beyond the aesthetics, the site needed to do real practical work — giving readers clear access to his books, offering places to sign up and stay connected, and providing enough depth for fans to explore the worlds, characters and locations of each title in detail. All of this, while being easy for A.S. Colworth to manage and update himself going forward.

Our strategy

Tone of voice first, everything else built around it

We started the project with a proper consultation — discussing genre, visual references, tone of voice, the kind of reader A.S. Colworth was writing for and the atmosphere he wanted the site to convey. This wasn't a conversation about features and pages. It was a creative conversation, and it shaped everything that followed.

From that foundation, we developed a design that felt distinctive and purposeful — clean enough not to distract from the work itself, but with enough character to feel like it belonged in the same world as the books. Imagery was chosen with care, typography was selected to reflect the tone and the overall visual language was one that a reader would recognise as belonging to A.S. Colworth specifically.

FThe site was built with community growth at its heart. Subscriber sign-up opportunities were built in naturally throughout — not aggressively, but consistently — giving readers who engaged with the content an easy way to stay connected and receive updates on new work. Deep-dive pages for individual books gave fans somewhere to explore lore, characters and locations in detail.

As standard, we provided full WordPress training at handover — giving A.S. Colworth complete confidence and control over his own site from day one.

What we tackled together

Challenge

Creating a design that matched the tone of the work

There are no shortcuts to getting the creative brief right for an author website. Generic design choices would have produced a site that felt disconnected from the work — and for an audience that buys into worlds and characters, that disconnect matters.
vs
Solution

A brand-led design process starting with tone, imagery and voice

We invested time upfront in understanding the work before we opened a design tool. The genre, the characters, the atmosphere of the writing — all of it informed the visual language of the site. The result was a design that felt like it belonged to A.S. Colworth specifically, not a template with his name on it.
Challenge

Building in subscriber and community features without overwhelming the experience

For an author, the subscriber list is one of the most valuable assets a website can build. But integrating sign-up prompts in a way that feels natural — rather than interruptive or pushy — requires careful thought about where and how they're placed.
vs
Solution

Strategic, non-intrusive subscriber touchpoints throughout the site

We identified the natural moments in the reader journey where a sign-up prompt felt genuinely useful rather than a barrier — after engaging with book content, at the end of deep-dive lore pages, in the site footer. The result was consistent subscription encouragement that respected the reading experience rather than interrupting it.
Challenge

Building a platform that A.S. Colworth could manage and grow independently

An author needs to be able to add new content, update book progress, post news and manage their site without being dependent on an agency for every change. The site needed to be built in a way that was genuinely manageable for a non-technical user.
vs
Solution

WordPress build with full training and handover

We built the site on WordPress — the right choice for a content-rich author platform — and provided thorough training at handover. A.S. Colworth left the project confident that he could publish updates, manage pages and grow the site independently, without needing to come back to us for routine tasks.

The results

A website worthy of the worlds it represents

A.S. Colworth now has a proper online home for his work — distinctive, tonally right and built to grow with his portfolio. The site provides a rich experience for readers, a clear path for new visitors to discover the books and a platform for the author to build a loyal community around his work over the long term.

Key takeaways

What this project taught us

Every project teaches us something. Here’s what the A.S Colworth partnership reinforced about what makes great web design work in the long run.

The creative brief is the most important brief

For a project like this, the conversation about tone, atmosphere and audience is more important than any conversation about features or pages. Get the creative direction right first and every other decision becomes easier — and the result feels cohesive rather than assembled.

A website for an author is a world, not just a shop window

Readers who engage with fiction are engaging with worlds, characters and stories. An author website that gives those readers somewhere to go deeper — lore pages, character guides, location detail — builds the kind of loyalty that a simple book listing page never could.

Independence is the best outcome for a solo creator

The most valuable thing we gave A.S. Colworth wasn't the design — it was the ability to manage his own website confidently. For a solo author who needs to update content regularly and build his audience over time, owning that process is far more empowering than being dependent on an agency.
