About the client

A premier publication for entrepreneurs that had outgrown its platform

The Successful Founder is a digital and print publication dedicated to guiding entrepreneurs through every stage of their business journey — from initial startup to global expansion. The platform provides expert-led guides, inspirational founder interviews and practical advice on leadership, the psychology of success and business growth.

Founded by Lisa Curtiss, The Successful Founder had built a genuinely impressive body of content and a loyal readership. With hundreds of articles published, a growing subscriber base and ambitious plans for the future, the business had outgrown the platform it was built on.

The GoDaddy website builder that had served them at the start was now a genuine constraint — limited customisation, a frustrating user experience and little room to implement the SEO improvements and structural changes the site needed. It was time for a proper home.

The challenge

Migrating hundreds of articles without losing a single ranking

The Successful Founder came to us frustrated with the limitations of their GoDaddy website. The platform left little room for customisation, made it difficult to implement proper SEO, and was increasingly struggling to handle the volume of content the publication was producing.

But this wasn't a simple redesign. The site had hundreds of published articles — each with their own URLs, internal links and accumulated SEO value. Moving a content-heavy publication to a new platform is a genuinely complex undertaking. Done carelessly, it can result in broken links, lost rankings and a significant drop in organic traffic that takes months to recover from.

The brief was clear but challenging: recreate and improve the existing website in WordPress, handle the full migration of all existing content, protect the site's SEO equity throughout the transition, and build a platform that could grow with the publication for years to come.

Our strategy

Migration-first thinking with the reader experience at its heart

From the first conversation, we reassured Lisa that everything could be preserved. We approached the project with migration strategy at the centre — mapping out every existing URL, planning the redirect structure and ensuring the XML sitemap and URL architecture were handled correctly before a single piece of content was moved.

With so much content to work with, getting the visual design and navigation right was equally important. We worked closely with Lisa to understand the editorial structure of the publication — the categories, series, interview formats and resources — and built a navigation and content hierarchy that made it easy for readers to find what they were looking for and discover more of what they loved.

Throughout the build, we kept the subscriber list growth goal front of mind — identifying strategic, non-intrusive opportunities to highlight the newsletter signup across the site without the aggressive pop-up experience that readers find off-putting.

After launch, we continued to work with Lisa — monitoring real user behaviour, gathering visitor feedback and iterating on the experience. This included adding 'read more' buttons, improving article discovery and refining the navigation based on how people were actually moving through the site.

What we tackled together

Challenge

Migrating hundreds of articles without losing SEO value

The Successful Founder had built up significant SEO equity across hundreds of published articles. Moving all of that content to a new platform and domain structure without careful planning risked broken links, lost rankings and a drop in organic traffic that could take months to recover from.
vs
Solution

Full SEO-safe migration with redirect mapping and sitemap management

We planned the migration meticulously — mapping every existing URL, implementing a comprehensive redirect structure, managing the XML sitemap and ensuring URL architecture was preserved or properly redirected. The migration protected the site's existing SEO equity and gave it a stronger technical foundation to build from.
Challenge

Organising a vast content archive for reader discovery

Hundreds of articles across multiple formats — interviews, guides, leadership pieces, startup advice — needed to be structured in a way that made sense to readers and encouraged deeper engagement with the publication, not just a single visit and exit.
vs
Solution

Content hierarchy and navigation built around reader journeys

We designed a content structure and navigation system that reflected how readers actually move through a publication — by topic, format, interest and stage of their entrepreneurial journey. Article discovery features, read-more prompts and internal linking were all built to keep readers engaged and exploring.
Challenge

Growing the subscriber list without alienating readers

Building a subscriber base was a key commercial goal for The Successful Founder — but the heavy-handed pop-up approach that many publications rely on was at odds with the quality and tone of the brand.
vs
Solution

Strategic, non-intrusive subscriber prompts throughout the site

We identified the right moments in the reader journey to surface newsletter sign-up prompts — after finishing an article, between content sections, in the sidebar — in ways that felt natural rather than interruptive. The result was a subscriber conversion strategy that respected the reader experience while consistently growing the list.

The results

A publication with a platform to match its ambition

The Successful Founder now has a fast, fully customised WordPress website that reflects the quality of the publication and gives the team the flexibility to grow. All existing content was successfully migrated, the site’s SEO equity was protected throughout, and the reader experience improved significantly — with ongoing UX refinements continuing to improve engagement after launch.

Key takeaways

What this project taught us

Every project teaches us something. Here’s what The Successful Founder partnership reinforced about what makes great web design and SEO work in the long run.

Migration strategy is as important as design

Moving a content-rich site to a new platform is a different challenge from a new build. The SEO implications of getting it wrong are significant and long-lasting. Treating the migration as a first-class part of the project — not an afterthought — is what protects the organic value the client has built.

Content structure shapes the reader experience

For a publication, how content is organised and surfaced is as important as the content itself. A well-designed content hierarchy that helps readers discover more of what they love turns a single visit into a habit — and a casual reader into a loyal subscriber.

The best improvements come after launch

The most meaningful UX refinements on The Successful Founder came from real visitor feedback and behaviour data after the site went live. Building in a post-launch review and iteration process — rather than treating launch as the finish line — is what takes a good website to a great one.
